You can be competent, respected, and successful and still be quietly run by a much younger version of yourself. Unhealed childhood wounds rarely announce themselves; in men they usually show up disguised as personality or “just how I am.” Here are seven common signs — and a grounded place to start. (Self-help, not therapy.)

1–3: Anger, shutdown, and control

Disproportionate anger over small things is often grief or fear that never got a voice. Emotional shutdown — going numb or distant under stress — was once a survival skill. A need for control usually traces back to a childhood that felt unpredictable.

4–5: People-pleasing and the harsh inner critic

Chronic people-pleasing often means a boy learned love had to be earned by keeping everyone else okay. A relentless inner critic is frequently an old voice you internalized long ago and never questioned.

6–7: Reading the room, and passing it on

Hyper-vigilance — reading a room before you read anything else — is a skill you built because you needed it. And repeating what was done to you: what you did not process tends to pass to your partner and kids.

What to actually do about it

None of this makes you broken, and none of it is permanent. Because these patterns were learned, they can be met and updated — privately, at your own pace. The work starts not with blame, but with meeting the boy who built them.

Frequently asked questions

Is inner-child work just for people with major trauma?

No. Most homes were ordinary, with tired people doing their best — and a boy still learned things there that run the show decades later. You do not need a dramatic story to benefit.

Is this therapy?

No. It is a self-guided workbook, not a substitute for professional care. If you are in crisis, reach out for help — in the US, call or text 988.

Do I have to confront my parents?

No. The work is private by design — no day asks you to contact or confront anyone. It is about you, not them.
