“Sometimes I feel like I hear a voice or feeling that guides me.”
Do we all have the same sense inside—that we were never truly alone?
I know we’ve all experienced hard times, and I can’t recall a single moment when, during one of my lowest points, God didn’t show up and guide me. I also can’t remember a time of struggle that didn’t ultimately make me stronger, more experienced, or more healed.
Thank God things don’t always go our way.
Because if they did, we’d never know how to handle adversity. In the healing world, there’s a belief that if someone can look back at a wound and appreciate how it shaped them—that’s a sign they’ve fully healed.
Meeting Myself for the First Time
I’ll never forget one of my mentors and intimacy coaches, Joe Keich.
I hired Joe to help me navigate a relationship I was in. But in the end, he helped me enter a relationship with myself—which, up until that point, I didn’t even know was possible.
Do you know yourself?
Can you spend time with yourself as a dear friend?
Do you have inner conversations or debates?
When I started building a relationship with myself, I began to uncover what I truly wanted. I started to listen and gave a voice to my internal self.
At the time, I was dating an older woman with more relational experience, and I was struggling to define what I wanted or what my boundaries were. Knowing myself changed that. Joe coached me into a relationship with myself, out of that romantic relationship, and then back into myself again.
You Already Know the Answer
Another mentor once told me:
“You never have to read a book, take a course, or ask anyone anything—because there’s thousands of years of wisdom inside your soul.”
Your sovereign self knows everything you need.
We often look outside ourselves for answers, when in truth, the deepest truths are found within.
A Practice of Listening
I’ve practiced training myself to hear that inner guidance.
Sometimes I’ll sit quietly in my library, look at my wall of old books, and ask:
“God, what book do you want me to read today?
What do you want me to think about or consider?”
If I sit in silence long enough, I’ll feel a nudge—or a knowing—and follow it. This moment-to-moment guidance happens in many ways throughout my life.
Sometimes it’s a gut feeling. Sometimes it’s a literal voice in my head that sounds like me. Sometimes it’s inspiration or a vision of how something will unfold.
Spiritual and ancient texts going back thousands of years tell stories of people guided by angels, spirit guides, loved ones, animals, God, the Holy Spirit, Higher Selves, and even their more mature selves.
It’s clear—we are being guided.
So the question becomes: How?
Does it work differently for everyone?
And how can we get more connected to that guidance?
How to Tune In
Step one: Ask.
Ask to hear, to see, to feel. Ask to become aware—or more aware—of your guidance. It’s often subtle.
Everyday Examples
The other day, I was unloading my truck and set my keys on the tailgate. I immediately felt a nudge:
“Don’t leave your keys there.”
Three hours later, I was frantically tearing through the house looking for them. They weren’t in the wooden bowl by the door. They were still on the tailgate—exactly where I knew I shouldn’t have left them.
Another time, I was in the bathroom getting Tylenol. I didn’t screw the lid on tightly. As I walked away, I heard:
“Put the lid on the medicine bottle.”
I stopped, went back, and secured it. An hour later, I opened the cabinet and the bottle fell. If I hadn’t closed it, pills would’ve gone everywhere.
These are small examples—but the same inner voice that warns you about keys or pill bottles can also guide your life, your relationships, your business, your truth.
The Deeper You Listen, the More You’ll Hear
One practice I’ve started is tuning in constantly. If I get pulled out of presence by a phone call or meeting, I return to that inner connection. I listen with faith.
Sometimes my ear rings, and I’ll say aloud:
“I’m listening—what are you saying?”
And yes, I laugh at myself. But I truly believe:
The more you ask, the more you become attuned.
The Story That Changed My Life
In my early 20s, I was returning from a church retreat in New Braunfels. I was exhausted. At a restaurant, I stuffed myself with food and ignored the obvious: I was tired, full, and about to drive four hours back to Houston.
On the road, I felt myself nodding off. I heard an inner voice suggesting I pull over and sleep.
I ignored it.
Then I remembered I hadn’t put on my seatbelt.
I ignored that too.
Then suddenly, I heard it again:
“Put on your f*ing seatbelt!”**
It wasn’t my usual internal voice—it felt foreign, like it came from something else.
I buckled up.
Minutes later, I woke up.
My truck was going 80 mph through the freeway median. I had fallen asleep with cruise control on.
I crashed into the side of an 18-wheeler. Both left tires were ripped off. The right side of my truck was destroyed. But I walked away without a scratch.
The sheriff arrived and looked at the wreck.
He said:
“Son, if you hadn’t been wearing your seatbelt, we’d be putting you in a body bag.”
Final Thoughts
That voice saved my life.
Whatever or whoever it was—it knew the future. It knew I would crash.
If that kind of guidance exists within us, then tuning into it should be one of the highest priorities of our lives.
